When a child is born, many parents ask the same questions. When should the aqiqah be done? How many goats for a boy, and how many for a girl? How should the meat be shared? This blog answers those questions in plain language, with reliable sources.

What you’ll find here

  • Aqiqah rulings: timing, the number and conditions of the animals, and sharing the meat
  • Newborn sunnah: naming, shaving the head, and tahnik
  • Sadaqah and kaffara: when and how to fulfil them
  • News from Aqiqah Sheba: new services and packages

How we write

Whenever we quote a hadith, we give the original Arabic, a plain-English meaning, the hadith number as listed on Sunnah.com, and the scholar who graded it. If a narration is weak, or if scholars differ, we say so clearly. Most Muslims in Bangladesh follow the Hanafi school, so on questions of fiqh we give the Hanafi position along with the classical work it comes from.

Here is the best-known hadith on aqiqah as an example:

Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
كُلُّ غُلاَمٍ رَهِينَةٌ بِعَقِيقَتِهِ تُذْبَحُ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ سَابِعِهِ وَيُحْلَقُ وَيُسَمَّى

Every child is held in pledge by his aqiqah: an animal is slaughtered for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved, and he is given a name.

Sunan Abi Dawud 2838Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)
